TBI Is a Spectrum
Traumatic brain injury ranges from mild TBI (concussion) with temporary symptoms and full recovery, to moderate TBI causing lasting cognitive and emotional impairments, to severe TBI involving structural brain damage and permanent disability. The middle range is where most missed diagnoses occur.
Signs of TBI
Seek emergency care immediately for: loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, seizures, severe or worsening headache, inability to recognize people, significant confusion.
See a neurologist for delayed symptoms: persistent headaches, difficulty concentrating or remembering, sleep changes, mood changes (irritability, depression, anxiety), light or noise sensitivity, dizziness, fatigue.
Why TBI Is Frequently Missed
Standard CT scans often appear normal in mild to moderate TBI. Emergency rooms focused on ruling out life-threatening injuries frequently discharge patients without proper TBI evaluation. A neurologist experienced in post-traumatic brain injury is essential for proper diagnosis.
